Tips for website content and software maintenance

With this article I will focus on two important items of website maintenance:

1. Software maintenance.
2. Content maintenance.

1. Software maintenance

It always surprises me how many people and even businesses (!!!) underestimate the importance of website content and software maintenance.  Most websites nowadays run on some sort of Control Management System. This means that the software and plugins of that CMS needs frequent updating. If you’re a webmaster yourself, you’ll know how often for instance WordPress and the plugins are coming up with a new update.

But, my website works fine… Ain’t it? I hear you; why fixing something when it ain’t broken, right?
There are various reasons for updating a software package. From small fixes in coding up to big security leaks that can give hackers access to your website. If you don’t act accordingly, your website could be in serious trouble. Running on outdated software is almost asking for troubles. In the end it will cost you more to get your website fixed after it goes down than to have regular maintenance.

2. Improving the content of your website

A website that always has the same content is not really interesting for search engines and visitors. Keeping your website actively updated is a must if you don’t want to loose precious visitors. As mentioned in my article ‘how often should I update my website‘, it will be good to review your website every so often and write down the changes you want to make. A good start would be:

a) Check the navigation, is it user friendly? Ask a friend to check it for you.
b) Analyze your site’s performance by running reports from the analytics program you use.
c) With the analytics reports some keywords pop up. Create a Q and A based on these keywords.
d) Update the old content by adding new content. Use the right keywords in your content, check your existing content also.

No time? No problem!

Updating your website on a frequent basis can be really time consuming. Especially when you break some coding or other problems pop up. Unless you know what you’re doing, I highly recommend hiring a web designer to improve your website on a regular basis. In my years as web designer I’ve come across a lot of websites that are due for maintenance. Search engines are not indexing the site as they used to and customers loose interest. If your website needs some TLC, you can check out my maintenance plans. They all come with a complementary monthly database backup and software updates. If you decide to do it yourself, please do it right! Your business deserves it.

Complementary maintenance

When you buy a website or e-commerce package you’ll get 3 months of complementary maintenance for free! This will allow you to let me work on your website for up to two hours per Month without any charge.
